Job Description

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS



  • Grade 12

  • A Master’s degree in Genetic Counselling or equivalent experience.

  • Registration or pending registration as a Genetic Counsellor (Independent Practitioner) with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA)

  • Minimum 1 years postgraduate experience (Internship) in Genetic Counselling at a recognized institution

  • Valid Drivers License

  • Computer literacy

  • Fluency in English, ability to communicate in IsiZulu will be an added advantage

  • Previous work experience in non-governmental organisations or funded programmes would be an advantage


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES


Participate in the provision of clinical congenital disorder services by:



  • Co-ordinating and advising on appropriate testing procedures;

  • Communicating all abnormal laboratory results to the Programme Manager; Facility Leads and/or to the participant;

  • Conducting assessments of all the PER outcomes with congenital disorder/s, whether for live or non-live births;

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, particularly in relaying sensitive information and difficult test results to participants

  • Providing appropriate management, psychosocial support, referrals, ethical counselling and follow-up of cases;

  • Participating in outreach programmes to provide and disseminate genetic counselling services to all communities within the catchment area of the PER (UBOMI BUHLE) sentinel sites;

  • Participating in teaching of Midwives and supplementary health professionals at the PER sentinel sites to ensure appropriate transfer of skills;

  • Participating in research projects;

  • Participating in academic programmes to update and maintain a high standard of expertise in an interdisciplinary context;

  • Submit daily, weekly and monthly scientific reports as required;

  • Taking part in the project’s monthly and quarterly review meetings; and

  • Conducting quality assurance and improvement activities as well as the monitoring and evaluation of genetic services
