A Challenging vacancy currently exists for a Field Ranger at Mapungubwe National Park and World Heritage Site. The successful candidate will have to be a highly motivated individual with the necessary practical skills and experience to assist with environmental management programs & operations in the park and will report to the Section Ranger.

Responsibilities:

The key performance areas of the successful candidate would include the following:

  • Law enforcement that will include participating in regular foot and vehicle patrols to prevent poaching, unauthorised access and movement within the park as well as sleeping out on anti-poaching and other patrols.
  • Assistance with natural resources management that includes the implementation and monitoring of invasive plant, alien animals, and unnatural soil erosion management systems.
  • Assistance with the reintroduction of animals and their monitoring as well as capturing operations within the park.
  • Monitoring and recording of resource management data, including rare plants and game numbers.
  • Assistance with the control of visitor, personnel and contractor behaviour and the assimilation, interpretation and dissemination of information as tasked.
  • Assistance with the maintenance and control of tools, equipment, vehicles and infrastructure that includes waterholes for game, boundary fences, roads and visitor facilities such as hiking trails, picnic sites and ablution facilities.
  • Perform basic administration such as the completion of logbooks, attendance registers, reporting, tool and stock control.
  • Guidance to visiting students during field work, film crews and research groups. 
  • Efficient and effectively ensure area integrity.
  • Relief work at other conservation-, tourism sections and wilderness camps.

The remuneration package includes a basic salary, based on the salary scale of a position with a Paterson B3 job grade, allowances and benefits as specified in the HR tariff Document and Conditions of Services of SANParks. The successful candidate will be accommodated in official accommodation in the park and must be prepared to work over weekends.   

Key Skills / Requirements

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities that are required for the job:

  • Grade 12 coupled with 3 years’ experience as a Field Ranger/Environmental monitor.
  • Fitness selection criteria of 8km in 45minutes.
  • National Diploma in Nature Conservation will serve as an added advantaged;
  • Valid firearm rifle competency and registered with SAPS will be a prerequisite.
  • A SAPS criminal record clearance certificate should accompany your CV.
  • Code EC drivers licence plus PDP.
  • Working knowledge of relevant conservation legislation;
  • Proficiency in English, Afrikaans, Venda, Tsonga and S. Sotho will be an added advantage;
  • Sound communication, organisational and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to do extended patrols under unfavourable conditions;
  • A healthy person with a high level of general fitness and mental alertness is required in this position;
  • Punctual, neat and responsible;
  • Ability to work on his/her own as well as in a team;
